Why is it so hard to watch Raya and the Last Dragon in 3D ?

Why is it so hard to watch Raya and the Last Dragon in 3D ?

3D fans are struggling to find 3D screenings of Raya and the Last Dragon. Why is this ? 🤔

1. Cinemark Theatres are refusing to show it

A Cinemark representative tells Deadline tonight, “In the current operating environment, we are making near-term booking decisions on a discrete, film-by-film basis, focusing on the long-term benefit of exhibitors, studios and moviegoers. While we are having conversations with The Walt Disney Company, we have not yet reached agreeable licensing terms for Raya and the Last Dragon. As we continue to work with our studio partners, we remain optimistic that we will reach mutually beneficial terms that will provide moviegoers the opportunity to see the exciting film lineup in our theatres.”

- Deadline

Essentially this means that Cinemark wants more money from showings of Raya and the Last Dragon. Disney refuses this deal so Cinemark refuses to show the movie in their cinemas. To learn more about these movies deals read the section below :

"Movie Studios — Arrangements vary, but the movie studio usually ends up with about 60 percent of the proceeds from American box offices. Overseas, the number is usually less, anywhere from 20 percent to 40 percent depending on the film distribution arrangements, agreements, and other costs associated with foreign distribution (not to mention piracy).

- TheWeek

With Raya and The Last Dragon being available to stream via Disney Plus Premier it’s understandable to why some theater chains want to renegotiate their film deals.

2. Very few theaters are showing it in 3D

Disney in their curtain raiser note reported that Raya will play in 2,000+ theaters this Friday (March 5th), including 200 IMAX screens, 360 Premium Large Format screens, 160 3D locations, and 45 D-Box/4D screens. The opening for Raya and the Last Dragon is in the $6M-$7M+ range per industry estimates.
- Deadline

Only 160 locations are showing Raya and the Last Dragon in 3D nationwide (USA).

According to NATOONLINE.ORG (National Association of Theatre Owners) 5,477 is the total number of US theater locations in 2020.

About 3% of US cinemas are currently showing Raya and the Last Dragon in 3D.

Remember that 3% does not include any cienmark theaters. I imagine that the number of open theatre’s is much lower, as many theaters never reopened after 2020.

Bottom-line :

Count yourself lucky if Raya and the Last Dragon is playing in 3D in a theatre near you. I recommend that 3D fans go watch Raya and the Last Dragon in 3D if they can because you may not get another chance. 3D Blu-ray releases are far from guaranteed anymore so go if you can and please be safe. Currently we cannot do a full 3D review of this movie because of the limited 3D availability. We plan to do 2D movie review podcasts for Raya and the Last Dragon in the coming days.

What can 3D Fans do , if anything?

I recommend you respectfully and calmly contact your local theater via email and tell them you want to see Raya and the Last Dragon in 3D (You might need to contact supervisors or corporate offices). With enough demand the theaters may try to get 3D screenings. They probably won’t care but it’s worth a shot.
