3D
The 3D in Caption America Civil War is very eye catching. The effects and motions pop out of the screen in the way 3D films should be. It was not irritating to the eyes in the slightest manner. Marvel Studios / Disney is moving in the right direction to incorporating 3D elements into their movies. This movie is a sign of this and I highly respect them for how they handled 3D within this movie. I recommend screening it in 3D specifically for the airport battle scene.
Final Verdict: Good 3D
Movie
Captain America Civil War is the sequel to both Avengers Age of Ultron and Captain America Winter Soldier and is another well made Marvel movie. The main theme of the movie is political in nature and almost all the avengers are in this movie. The movie revolves around multiple story elements that work together to build a single narrative.
One story element revolves around government oversight and if the avengers should be allowed to work independently. Another story element is centered on the character of Bucky and if he can be trusted. Finally another plot revolves around the real villain of the movie and what he wants to do to the avengers. The movie flows very smoothly and is very entertaining and funny from beginning to end. The theme of government oversight is an interesting and smart aspect of the movie and different characters have different opinions on if the avengers need oversight. The group dynamic works well and I am sold on to why each character has different opinions on the matter. The government oversight seems logical after the events of previous Marvel movies but the implementation feels rushed and seems to come out of nowhere for this movie. Sadly this story aspect isn't as developed as I would have liked and it’s unclear to what exactly are the end results of this new potential regulation.
I mentioned earlier that almost all the Avengers are in this movie, now the rational for why some characters are omitted and others are present is quickly glanced over. One of the newest members of the avengers is absent from a few key scenes for no apparent reason. I won’t specify to which character I am referring to but it seems strange and arbitrary to when the character is present within the movie. The movie also includes a few new characters that haven't been previously introduced into this cinematic universe. One new character is Spider-Man who is reintroduced in this movie and all but steals the middle of the movie. I found this Spider-Man to be very funny, well choreographed and had excellent chemistry with the other characters. I look forward to watching this younger Spider-Man in future Marvel movies. Another new character is the Black Panther who has a commanding and strong performance with clear motivations. The Black Panther character is well introduced and feels different from other characters and makes sense within the context of the movie. The movie also introduces a female character, which sadly feels tacked on. This female character is undeveloped, rushed and the sole purpose of this character is to build a romantic subplot for one of the main characters, which I feel is totally unnecessary and is forced. She basically serves as a human plot device to move the story along and her inclusion was mishandled. The disagreements between the characters eventually escalate to a violent action scene at an airport. This airport action scene is funny, exciting, well shot and brilliantly executed and is easily the highlight of the movie. The real villain of the movie sadly is the worst part and is totally forgettable. The motivation of the villain is pathetic and is neither interesting nor compelling when everything is revealed. On a technical level I had a few small issues including giant setting title cards, and camera that shakes too much in a few action scenes. Overall the issues I had with this movie are minor and revolve mostly to story aspects not being fully explored and fleshed out. The action, comedy and the characters work well in this movie. The movie has some issues that keep it from being amazing, but overall I can still highly recommend this fun smart action movie.
Final Verdict: 8/10
