Nintendo 3DS was best selling video game console for July 2016

Nintendo News: Pokémon Mania Helps Drive Nintendo 3DS to No. 1

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Nintendo 3DS platform finished July atop the hardware and software sales charts according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the U.S. The strong performance is in part thanks to the release of the Monster Hunter Generations game, continued momentum from the price drop of the Nintendo 2DS system and widespread positive public reception for the Pokémon GO mobile app, which has renewed interest in core Pokémon games on Nintendo systems. Additionally:

  • The Nintendo 3DS family of systems sold nearly 80 percent more units this July compared to the same time period a year ago, and finished as the overall best-selling video game system in July. On the software side, Capcom’s Monster Hunter Generations emerged as the best-selling game for any system.
  • July sales of the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire games for Nintendo 3DS were over 80 percent higher than July 2015. The games launched in November 2014.
  • July sales of the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y games for Nintendo 3DS were almost 200 percent higher than a year ago. The games launched in October 2013 and finished No. 16 and No. 22 on July’s best-sellers list, respectively.
  • Games playable on Nintendo systems claimed five of the top 11 spots on the July best-sellers list. These include Monster Hunter Generations from Capcom at No. 1, Minecraft: Wii U Edition from Microsoft at No. 6, Pokémon Omega Ruby at No. 8, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire at No. 10 and Kirby: Planet Robobot at No. 11.
  • The Nintendo 2DS system has crossed the 2 million lifetime sales mark in the U.S.

*Data regarding physical sales of games are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

60 Million Nintendo 3DS have sold worldwide

May was a milestone month for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Having recently passed 60 million units worldwide, the current generation’s top-selling dedicated gaming platform welcomed an entirely new audience with a lower suggested price of $79.99 for the Nintendo 2DS system. This big value has already shown big results. According to the NPD Group, which tracks U.S. video game sales, in May the system saw a 38 percent sales boost over April and a 148 percent increase year-on-year – all after just one week at the new price.

New owners of the Nintendo 2DS system are finding an instant library of incredible games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which reentered the NPD Group’s top 25 best-sellers list nearly five years after its release. That game and other hit titles are available for $19.99 as part of the Nintendo Selects collection. Players can also look forward to plenty of exciting new games for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems this year and beyond, such as Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon this November.

On the Wii U console, downloads of Minecraft: Wii U Edition from Nintendo eShop grew more than 40 percent month-on-month thanks to the release of the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, which adds fun Super Mario-themed content at no extra charge. The physical version of Minecraft: Wii U Edition, which includes the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack on the disc, will release on June 17 at a suggested retail price of just $29.99.

My Thoughts

The Nintendo 3DS had a slow start but it's really became a wonderful handheld device that has glasses free stereoscopic 3D .

3D Instagram A case for a Nintendo 3DS App

Recently I worked on an article for another website:

3Dwiggle.com

They have software that lets you change 3D pictures and make them into wiggle GIFs. These animated GIFs give the illusion of 3D by wiggling .

See examples below:

This 3D GIF is from the Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land .

This article is about the popular application Instagram and I make the case for a Nintendo 3DS application. Here is a small sample from the blog post:

Currently, Instagram is not an available for download for the Nintendo 3DS at the Nintendo e-shop. There is a possibility of accessing Instagram via the Nintendo 3DS built-in web browser, but the experience is far from ideal. I believe this is a huge missed opportunity both for Nintendo and Instagram. It’s a missed opportunity for fans of stereoscopic 3D photography and within this blog post I will discuss the possibility of Instagram for the Nintendo 3DS.
