3D
The 3D visuals for Black Panther are a nice but unnecessary addition to this movie. The 3D really shines with two close combat scenes on a waterfall. The movie has many darkly lit scenes and sadly darkness don’t compliment 3D. These darker scenes hamper what could have been an excellent 3D presentation. Pop out 3D is used occasionally for a few fun scenes. However 3D depth is the real star of this show. The sense of scale is dramatically enhanced with 3D depth in many scenes. The movie looks sharp and vivid in 3D. Overall I enjoyed watching this movie in 3D, but it never wowed me.
Final Verdict: Good 3D
Movie
Black Panther is a fascinating movie. Black Panther is unlike anything I have ever previously seen. This movie embraces African culture, futuristic technology and feels new and different but also fits the enjoyable Marvel formula. I enjoyed the deeper themes that are present within this story. Those deeper themes are intelligently interwoven into this story and elevate this movie. These themes make for a more interesting narrative and don’t feel overly preachy. The movie is self contained so you don’t need to watch any of the previous Marvel movies or read any specific comic books to enjoy this movie.
The story of Black Panther takes place in Wakanda. Wakanda is a fictional highly advanced isolated African nation. T’Challa is the main character of this movie. T’Challa will soon become the new king of Wakanda. First T'Challa must prove his worth to become the king. If he becomes the king of Wakanda how will lead this country forward? For the most part the movie flows well from scene to scene, but at times it can feel slow. The movie does a superb job of world building and setting up its premise. The movie has a large cast of enjoyable and memorable characters. The movie does have some minor plot holes. Some story elements feel contrived and fall a little too perfectly into place.
I really enjoyed the two villains within this movie. Ulysses Klaue is a mercenary who has a metallic weaponized arm and wants to steal vibranium from Wakanda. Vibranium is a extremely powerful fictional metal that Wakanda is rich in. Ulysses is a fun character because he is well written, and commands of the scenes that he is in. I found Ulysses Klaue to be compelling and fun antagonist. Killmonger is a very shakespearian character with close ties to the royal Wakandan family. Killmonger is a very sympathetic character. The motivations for Killmonger are well formed and I really liked his dialog. Killmonger is possibly the best and most fully developed villains in the Marvel cinematic universe. I enjoyed both villains within this movie and they both engage significant character development for T’Challa.
The movie is beautiful to watch both because of the excellent cinematography and enjoyable special effects. The movie showcases many gorgeous locations and has a style that is unlike anything I have ever seen in a movie. The futuristic technology the movie presents looks different, but is not far fetched. The action scenes are well executed and are fun. The camera likes to pan around the scenery and give the viewer a unique perspective. The color palette , costume design, makeup and sets are all top notch and some of the best Marvel Studios has ever done.
Overall the Black Panther movie is a massive success. The movie has it all, excellent story, enjoyable characters, and many fun action scenes. I have minor issues with the plot, but all things considered I loved this movie. Black Panther is easily one of the best Marvel movies and it shouldn’t be missed.
