James Cameron’s “Titanic” has been set for a 20th anniversary re-release in the Dolby Vision technology in 87 AMC theaters for a week, starting on Dec. 1.
Dolby Laboratories, Paramount Pictures, and AMC Theatres made the announcement Wednesday with AMC launching online ticket sales. The blockbuster, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and won 11 Academy Awards, will be shown in 3D at 20 locations.
“We mastered a few minutes of ‘Titanic’ in Dolby Vision and I was stunned,” Cameron said. “It was like seeing it for the first time. Now that the entire film has been mastered, I’m excited to share it with audiences across the U.S.”
“This is beyond 3D, beyond 70mm, it’s beyond anything you’ve seen before,” he added. “The image leaps off the screen as bright and vibrant as life itself. This is the way all movies should be seen and without a doubt, ‘Titanic’ has NEVER looked better.”
Cameron, who is in production on four “Avatar” sequels, won the Oscar for best director for “Titanic.” The movie grossed $2.18 billion worldwide for Paramount and Fox, which co-financed the original movie. The only movie to score a higher gross is “Avatar” at $2.8 billion.
“James Cameron shares our vision for creating the world’s best cinematic experiences,” said Doug Darrow of Dolby Laboratories. “Our partnership with James and Paramount Pictures has enabled us to showcase a masterpiece of theater in the most incredible way, leveraging Dolby Vision to breathe new life into one of the most awarded films in the history of cinema. ‘Titanic’ at Dolby Cinema is truly a can’t-miss experience.”
