Star Wars IX The Rise of Skywalker 3D Movie Review

3D

Simply put you don't need to see Star Wars IX The Rise of Skywalker in 3D. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t hate the 3D aspect of this movie. I just feel like the 3D is underutilized to the point of it not being worth while. The movie has many excellent shots in 3D. Several scenes use 3D well. One scene specifically in a snowy planet looks fantastic as the snow flurries move around the main characters in 3D space. Other random shots are peppered into this movie that have great 3D visuals. Sadly the 3D aspect is largely absent from the majority of this film. Most of this movie looks very flat. I would say that 30% of this movie looks very nice in 3D. This movie also has issues with flashing lights. I guess the “JJ Abrams visual style” has de-evolved from over use of lens flares to over use of strobe effect. Damn you JJ Abrams this is a movie not a rave laser light show! I feel like the strobe effect at times can mess up the 3D aspect of this movie, so I can understand why the 3D aspect was potentially downplayed in this movie. I found the strobe effect very visually distracting and at many times I looked away at the screen because it was just too much. If you are sensitive to strobe visuals (epilepsy) don’t watch this movie because this movie might give you a seizure because of its liberal and constant use of strobe effect. I am not sensitive to the strobe effect and most of the time I don’t mind it but this was really excessive and it really annoyed me. I don’t know if it was just my theater that had issues with this film. I also felt like many close up shots were blurry and out of focus. The camera work is also very choppy too. It was hard to focus your eyes for very long because the next quick cut could happen at any minute. I cannot recommend watching Star Wars Rise of Skywalker in 3D.

Final Verdict: Weak 3D 2D Recommended

Movie

Star Wars IX The Rise of Skywalker is a frankenstein's monster of a movie. I did enjoy this movie but overall it’s a bloated stapled together narrative mess. This is one of the hardest movies to review without spoilers but I will try my best to tell you what I liked and didn’t like about this movie without ruining it.

Rise of Skywalker takes place some time after the events of The Last Jedi. This movie serves as a third movie in this Star Wars sequel trilogy and it concludes the stories of Rey, Finn, Poe & BB8. In many ways this film feels like a massive course correction from Last Jedi. The plot of revolves around Rey, Fin, Poe and the resistance who is trying to find a way to defeat the first order and restore peace to the galaxy. The first half of this movie feels like a game of find the macguffin. The main characters keep visiting different planets to find different things they need and it becomes annoying. The movie reintroduces a classic villain from the Star Wars lore. I won’t mention his name for the sake of spoilers but I will say this addition didn’t feel organically input into this narrative. I feel like the reintroduction of this villain feels too convenient for this story. The make it work but it’s not pretty and its far from ideal. This is kinda like making square peg fit into the circular hole, yeah it’s possible but it’s far from a natural fit. Does the resistance find a way to save the galaxy ? Does Rey find the truth about her ancestry ? You will have to watch the movie to find out.

My biggest problem with this movie are the huge amount of plot contrivances. I can suspend my disbelief to a point, but this movie is ridicilous. The plot contrivances also bleed over to issues that I have with certain characters. Rey will often space out and abandon her comrades. The movie finds flimsy excuses to separate Rey from the rest of the group. I found Rey to be annoying in this movie. I liked her character in the previous two Star Wars movies The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens but I didn’t like her in this movie. Moving on from Rey on three different occasions three different characters are essentially used as plot devices and it feels off-putting. It’s hard to describe but many story beats feel pointless. Too many times things fell too perfectly into place.

The action, special effects, comedy and the conclusion are really enjoyable aspects of this movie. Action scenes are thrilling to watch and feel well choreographed. The special effects are well done and compliment the action scenes well. The comedic aspects of this movie work perfectly. I had many hearty laughs as I watched this movie. Poe is given more screen time in this movie and I love it. The movie concludes in a satisfying way even it feels too convenient. The movie has many touching scenes that truly resonate and are well done. This is a very entertaining fun action packed movie.

Regarding the filmmaking I didn’t like many aspects of this movie. The strobe effect is over used in this movie. The movie has too many choppy quick cuts. Many shots are too zoomed in to the characters. Some of the movie looks blurry. Somehow it feels both too long and rushed at the same time. I also feel like this movie could have been called episode 10 instead of 9 because I feel like they skipped over many large aspects of the plot. This movie feels sloppily put together to try to please everyone.

Overall I did enjoy my time with Star Wars IX The Rise of Skywalker. It is a very flawed movie but I did have fun with it.

Final Verdict: 7/10

Solo a Star Wars Story 3D Movie Review

Solo A Star Wars Story

3D Movie Review

3D

Sadly the 3D element of this movie is pathetic and worthless. The movie doesn’t do much of anything with pop out 3D. Depth based 3D is essentially a non-factor too. The 3D does give the viewer some separation between the characters in 3D, as some characters appear closer or farther away from each other. That being said, who cares? One action scene in space toward the end of the movie did look decent in 3D. Overall the 3D visuals for this movie aren’t worthwhile and are totally forgettable.

Final Verdict: Weak 3D 2D Recommended

Movie

Han Solo is an iconic ‘Star Wars’ character and is one of the most liked characters in all of cinema. Han Solo is a loveable cocky scoundrel that always finds a way to survive even in the most impossible of odds. This movie follows Han Solo on his space adventures as he discovers new friends and foes and pursues his dream of being an intergalactic pilot.

In the original ‘Star Wars’ movie trilogy the great Harrison Ford portrayed Han Solo. Alden Enrereich brings this new younger version of Han Solo to life. This Han Solo is a charming, funny cunning and is enjoyable to watch on screen. Alden does a fantastic job in this role. Donald Glover is also a stand out as a younger Lando Calrissian. Glover is just a joy to watch and stole every scene with his endless charisma. The movie has many fun new characters including a sassy robot named L3, and a likeable mercenary named Beckett. Dydren Vos is the main antagonist of this movie and I hated this character. This villain is a generic evil mobster character is cheesy and over the top. I hated every scene that he was in. Many of the characters are superfluous and only serve to further the plot. Overall I do like all the characters within this movie with the exception of the villain, which is fairly one-dimensional.

The movie is a smaller scale stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ adventure. This movie takes place a few years before the events of the forth episode (New Hope) in the ‘Star Wars’ saga. The movie is a fairly strait forward adventure tale with many twists and turns. I found the movie to be fairly predictable and simplistic. The movie does have problems with pacing and it has many plot holes. The movie jumps from scene to scene and doesn’t do much to build the characters. At times the plot is too contrived and convenient and leaves the viewer with more questions than answers.  I didn’t like the ending to this movie, which felt tacked-on and is sloppily put together. The action scenes are well done and the comedic element of the movie works well. The movie has its problems but I still enjoyed myself.

Overall “Solo” is a fun lighthearted adventure that I can recommend. I liked the movie but I didn’t love it and in many ways the movie left me feeling lukewarm.

Final Verdict: 7/10

Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi

Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi

Written Review By : Adolph Vega

3D

Sadly the 3D element for this movie is wildly inconsistent. Many scenes the 3D was totally absent and not noticeable. Other scenes the 3D was very nice and added to the fun. One chase scene within a cave looked very nice in 3D. Another scene as people looked down a huge cliff the 3D depth was very helpful to make the height more menacing. Overall I am happy with the 3D visuals for this movie, but they are far from a necessity to enjoy the film.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

‘Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi’ is a dramatically different movie than I expected it to be. Many times it takes the lore from the previous films and discards or changes it. Where things were previously black and white, now many shades of gray are present. Many people complained that the previous movie in this franchise (Episode VII: The Force Awakens) was too safe and too familiar, so this movie boldly treks into a new direction and is a very different kind of ‘Star Wars’ film. It is very difficult to explain why this movie is so different without spoiling the movie, so I will try to keep this review brief and as spoiler free as I possibly can.

‘Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi’ continues the story of Finn, Rey, Poe and more within the rebellion. The first order led by the Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren are trying to eradicate the rebellion and fully take over the galaxy. Rey seeks training and mentoring from the legendary Luke Skywalker, but is he interested in helping Rey? The movie is split up into three separate but interlinked plots. All of the plots eventually join together for an epic conclusion. This movie is very slow paced for a “Star Wars” movie. The slowness of this movie didn’t bother me because I was totally drawn into this story and the characters. The movie is beautiful to look at with stunning cinematography, fantastic special effects, excellent camera work, gorgeous locations and excellent creature design. This movie really develops the ‘Star Wars’ universe and makes for a more diverse a more complex narrative. Mark Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker and I adore this older more jaded version of this character. This performance is both interesting and very different than what you might expect. I also love Carrie Fisher’s role of Leia. Leia is strong woman that has a commanding warm presence on screen. It saddens me that Carrie Fisher tragically died in 2016, and this will be her final performance in this iconic role. I really enjoyed the new character of Rose. Rose’s casino subplot may at first glance seem frivolous, but it adds more depth to the universe, and teaches a valuable lesson to several characters. Overall the story is nearly perfectly executed and I was captivated from beginning to end.

The movie is not perfect and I do have some minor problems with it. Some of the jokes and gags fall flat and at times the comedy feels forced. The pacing can be dramatically different depending on which subplot the movie focuses on and this can be jarring to the viewer. At times the movie purposefully teases the audience with hanging plot threads that are not fully resolved. I don’t care if all plot threads are never fully resolved, I enjoy the mysterious grandeur of it all. The issues I had with the movie are trivial and don’t dramatically hurt my enjoyment of this movie.

In closing this movie is superb film making and this is my favorite “Star Wars” movie in the franchise. The movie has many fun twists and turns and at times purposely subverts the expectations of the viewer and I respect that. I can understand how some hardcore fans are exasperated by this movie, but I am wowed by it. New blood has been transfused into this long standing franchise, and future “Star Wars” movies will never be the same after this movie. ‘Last Jedi’ is more complex, more cerebral, and boldly goes where no “Star Wars” movie has gone before and I applaud it.

Final Verdict: 9 / 10, Editors Choice Movie Award
