Minions 2 Rise of Gru 3-D Movie Review

3D

Minions Rise of Gru looks very nice in 3D. I do think that it could have been a stronger presentation as some scenes appear flat and lack depth. Fans of 3D will be happy with this presentation as we get some nice pop outs and a decent amount of depth in some scenes. Occasionally the movie will have a sequence where it goes into slow motion and those quick scenes really look wonderful in 3D. Sometimes the movie will use a 2D animation style and those scenes also benefit from being in 3D. I like how the movie uses layering to make the 2D scenes look more visually interesting. The final battle scene with the magical creatures fighting the minions is especially strong in 3D. Another scene with some henchmen fighting Master Chow in the alley was very enjoyable in 3D. The 3D comes and goes, and it seems to be almost turned off in many scenes. It just feels like they held back and only used 3D in some scenes where the entire movie could have looked fabulous in 3D. Overall Minions Rise of Gru has many memorable moments of superb 3D, so I do recommend it. If I were to use a number scale the 3D is maybe a 7/10 when I think it could have easily been a 10/10.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Minions Rise of Gru is the second ‘minions’ movie and the fifth movie in the ‘Despicable’ franchise.  The minions are back in another wacky movie adventure. To be blunt this isn’t a great movie, but it is more fun than I thought it would be.

Minions Rise of Gru continues the story that began in the original Minions movie.  Don’t worry this movie is self-contained and is strait forward, so you can watch it even if you haven’t seen of the previous movies in the “Despicable” movie franchise. The story of Minions Rise of Gru is all over the place. Minions Rise of Gru is set in the 1970s and Gru is about 11 years old. Though a series of wacky shenanigans Gru is kidnapped, and the minions need to rescue their boss. The movie juggles several subplots to make its story. You have one subplot with three minions learning martial arts from Master Chow and trying to rescue Gru. You have another subplot with Gru and his kidnapper bonding. You have another subplot with one minion who is trying to obtain a magical talisman. Finally, you have the Vicious 6 supervillain gang who want to get revenge on Gru. All these subplots combine to become a 90-minute film. The movie is very fast paced, and it rarely gives the audience a moment to breath before the next gag. Many elements of the story fall too perfectly into place. The movie has no real stakes or consequences. I know this is an animated movie for children so I should cut it some slack, but this movie can become tedious to watch. Some of the subplots could have been consolidated or deleted all together with little being lost from the whole package. This movie feels like a series of skits that are loosely connected to make a narrative. Simply put this movie has too much going on, and it doesn’t know how to handle it all.

Minions Rise of Gru is not going to be for everyone, yet I did enjoy my time with this movie. I found the elements with Gru and the Vicious 6 villain gang to be the most amusing aspects of this movie. I really loved Steve Carell’s portrayal of a young gru. I want to know more about the Vicious 6 and all its members. The comedy is basic, but I did find myself laughing at many points. The animation is well done and has a nice style to it. Placing this movie in the 1970’s is a gimmick, but it worked to make it a more fun and interesting setting. Master Chow is wonderful character, and she deserves her own TV Show / movie. I really like the dynamic between the character of Wild Knuckles and Gru. The soundtrack is incredible, and it fits the movie perfectly. The minions are less annoying in this movie than they have been in previous films. Maybe it was my low expectations, but I found more enjoyment from this movie than I expected to. I fully assumed that I would hate this movie, but Minions Rise of Gru is a passable way to spend 90 minutes of your day. FYI this movie as a nice mid credits scene that is worth checking out.

Minions Rise of Gru is a fine movie, and despite its many flaws I did like it. I will likely forget this movie in a week but somehow some way this movie works, and it has some merit as family friendly entertainment.

Final Verdict: 6/10

Lightyear 3D Movie Review

Lightyear 3D Movie Review

Light year 3-d movie review

3D

The 3D is an afterthought with Lightyear. It is so shallow, I bet you can probably watch the 3D version without glasses, and hardly notice a difference. It's a real shame, because the few times it does pop-out or goes deep; it is glorious. The various flight sequences are the 3D stand out scenes. Unfortunately, those moments are few and far between. The animation is top tier and the textures, lighting and shadows are all gorgeous. It’s too bad that not as much care was spent on the 3D aspect of Lightyear. Lightyear easily has the weakest 3D in a Pixar film in recent memory. In closing, I don’t hate the 3D aspect of Lightyear, but I can only barely recommend it.

Final Verdict:Good 3D

Movie

Lightyear is Pixar's attempt at a summer box office extravaganza. Disney really tried to do something different with the Toy Story franchise with this movie and, it doesn't all work.

Depending on your relationship with Disney nostalgia and Pixar canon, Lightyear could really trigger your nerd-rage. A pity because, overall, this is a good film; something that will probably be lost in the aftermath of the major spoiler filled twists to the film. Chris Evans is fine voicing Buzz Lightyear in this movie. Tim Allen (in the Toy Story movies) and Patrick Warburton (in the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV show) were also fine in their versions of this character. The film opens with a text crawl stating this was the movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy that Andy got in the original Toy Story movie. Why was this a text crawl and not an animated scene in this movie? This could have tied in perfectly with a remastered opening of the original Toy Story movie. Wouldn't we all like to revisit Andy and his toys with modern 2022 CGI animation? Lightyear is kind of a throwback to the 1950s sci-fi books and their "hard" science approach to storytelling, but with 21st century values. This movie is slowly paced, so don't be surprised if the kids doze off between the various action sequences. Of all the new characters introduced in Lightyear, Sox the robotic cat is the real stand out. He gets all of the best lines, most of the laughs and probably will sell millions and millions Sox the cat toys. Why Andy preferred Buzz to Sox is a mystery for the ages. Please be sure to wait around after the movie ends for the mid-credit, and the two post-credit scenes.

Lightyear is a good movie that doesn’t exactly reach the same quality as the other Toy Story films. It’s not going to make everyone happy, but it’s a solid movie that most people will be able to enjoy.

Final Verdict: 7/10

Jurassic World Dominion 3-D 3D movie review

3D

The two words that best describes the 3D aspect of Jurassic World Dominion are disappointing and inconsistent. This movie probably has the weakest 3D from all of the Jurassic 3D movie releases. For a huge amount of the movie’s runtime I forgot that I was watching a 3D movie. Sometimes the 3D was essentially just two layers of 3D, the foreground and background. With the foreground focusing on the character talking and background being totally irrelevant. Jurassic World Dominion definitely had its moments of awesome 3D. Sadly these moments were few and far between in the first half of the movie. The 3D is stronger in the second half of the movie. You will get both pop-out and depth based 3D in Jurassic World Dominion. You will see a gun or hand pop-out in many screens. Various dinosaurs do occasionally jump out of the screen during the various action sequences. A few times 3D depth made hallways more pronounced. The movie has many darkly its scenes and they all still looked very nice in 3D (not all movies can do this well) . The movie does have a few stand out 3D scenes. The scene with the women and the locusts in the powered down lab was especially strong in 3D. The motorcycle chase scene was also very nice in 3D. The 3D in Jurassic World Dominion did help me get more invested in the various action scenes. Maybe it was my local theatre, but I felt like the 3D aspect of Jurassic World Dominion should have looked better. Ultimately I felt like the 3D aspect in Jurassic World Dominion was an afterthought and that it was only barely passable.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Jurassic World Dominion is the third ‘world’ movie and the ‘final’ movie in the ‘Jurassic saga’. Does this movie roar like a T-rex or is it to quote Dr. Ian Malcolm “ one big pile of shit ” ?

The story of Jurassic World Dominion is simply okay. The movie starts with a news report that spoon feeds you exposition. This introductory info dump explains some aspects from the previous movie (Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom) and what has happened since the events of that film. The movie is more or a less an excuse to bring back the stars of the various Jurassic movies into one crossover spectacle. Many aspects of this movie are very stupid. I’m not going to spoil all the idiocy and asinine moments in this movie. Be prepared to take some massive dinosaur sized leaps in logic as you watch this film. This movie has essentially two plots that weave together to form the entire narrative. You have the evil corporation plot (Monsanto parody?) and rescuing the kidnapped dinosaur plot. Both plots in Jurassic World Dominion are basic, entertaining and are simple enough to understand and follow. Sadly both of the plots are derivative and convoluted. So many things in this movie are just too convenient to be fully believable. The humor in Jurassic World Dominion works well. The various nods to the previous movies were nice, and are well integrated into the movie. Despite its many flaws I still was able to enjoy the plot of Jurassic World Dominion.

I really liked the huge cast of characters in this movie. The characters have a great chemistry which each other. Many of the major characters from the original Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies return for this movie. The film does include new characters so it’s not all dependent on legacy characters. DeWanda Wise plays Kayla Watts in this movie. Kayla is a pilot and a mercenary. DeWanda Wise is gorgeous, and she has a wonderful personality in this movie. Kayla Watts was the breakout surprise character of this movie and I would love to see more piloting adventures with her being the main star. I also liked Campbell Scott as Lewis Dodgson. Lewis Dodgson is the villain of this movie. Dodgson does the perfect parody of Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. I am a little sad that William H Macy doesn’t return to play Paul Kirby in this movie. I’m a big fan of Jurassic Park III and William Macy is a fantastic actor. Many of the new characters introduced in this movie are essentially just in the movie to move the plot forward. For having such a huge cast of characters I was surprised how well they all worked together.

I adored all of the various action scenes in Jurassic World Dominion. The action scenes are well choreographed and they are very fun to watch. The special effects look fantastic and I never doubted the CGI on the various dinos. I’m very happy to finally see some feathered dinosaurs in this film series. These feathered dinosaurs are cool to look at and are very menacing on screen. I was on the edge of my seat for many action scenes in this movie. The fun action scenes are the main reason to watch any of the recent Jurassic movies and this movie definitely delivers on that regard.

Overall I can recommend going to the theatre and watching Jurassic World Dominion. I neither loved, nor did I hate this movie. It’s a very good entertaining movie, but this is not great filmmaking. Many times I rolled my eyes at the various contrived plot points. In closing Jurassic World Dominion is a stupid fun action summer movie, nothing more nothing less.

Final Verdict: 7/10
