Encanto 3D Movie Review

The 3-D aspect of Encanto is well done yet it could have been better. The movie definitely benefits from being in 3D as it looks vibrant in 3D. A few key scenes use 3D depth to make in the scenes more intense. During the movie several characters have musical scenes and these musical scenes really shine in 3D. You get some occasional 3D pop outs but it’s fairly rare outside of some random things. Maybe it was my theater but I felt like the 3D should have been stronger and more prominent. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy the 3D aspect of Encanto but I just felt that it was a little subdued. I imagine that 3D fans will be very happy with the 3D in Encanto. In conclusion Encanto looks very nice in 3D and at times it can look incredible.

Movie

Encanto is the spanish word for charm (among other things). Charming is a perfect way to describe this magical animated movie from Disney. 

The story of Encanto revolves around the character of Mirabel. Mirabel lives with her family in a magical house in Columbia. Mirabel’s family has various magical abilities. Sadly Mirabel doesn’t have any magical abilities. Suddenly the magical powers begin to disappear from the house and the family and Mirabel starts to investigate. The story is of Encanto is not your typical Disney fairytale. The movie doesn’t have a villain and the many elements of the story are never fully explained. I actually really like that some of the movie is left to mystery instead of being explained away. Encanto is a unique movie that has excellent pacing. I loved all of the characters in Encanto. These characters have depth and are have great personalities on screen. The movie has a real heart to it and it feels genuine. All the voice acting is top notch and the dialogue between characters is well done and it feels natural. The humor in this movie is also well done. The comedy has a light touch but it’s really well implemented into the story. Encanto is a fantastic movie and is top tier Disney. 

Encanto is a musical with many original songs. This musical element is a big part of the movie and overall it’s well handled. I enjoyed all the musical scenes when they appeared on screen. That being said I don’t feel like this movie has any stand out song. It’s all songs are sung beautifully with wonderful visuals but I can’t remember any of the songs a day after watching the movie. Frozen had “Let it go”, Little Mermaid had “Under The Sea”, Beauty and the Beast has “Be Our Guest”, Moana had “Your Welcome” , Aladdin has “Friend Like Me” and sadly Encanto doesn’t have an equivalent to any of those awesome songs. Considering that this movie has so many songs it’s disappointing that none of them truly pop. This song issue might be the only weakness of Encanto.

The visuals of Encanto are truly gorgeous. All characters look distinct from one another so it’s easy to tell them apart. It’s all so colorful and beautifully animated. Encanto is truly a feast for the eyes. I love how the characters look realistic yet stylized. I imagine that one day Encanto will be seen as a fantastic showcase movie to show off future televisions or monitors. 

In closing Encanto is one of my favorite movies of 2021. Encanto is a fun emotional movie that feels original. Encanto isn’t a perfect movie but it’s pretty close. 

Final Verdict:

The Eternals 3D Movie Review

The 3D in The Eternals is very well done. This is all the more surprising because of all the darkly lit scenes in the movie. They all pop out properly and offer a great amount of depth. Scenes where various Eternals use their powers (especially flying) are breathtaking in 3D. Stand out 3D scenes include: a Bollywood musical number, a deviant battle sequence involving splashing water, and the active volcano scene. The 3D greatly adds to the beautiful cinematography and scenery of The Eternals. I definitely recommend watching The Eternals in 3D.

Movie

The Eternals is not like most other Marvel cinematic universe movies. This is both a good and bad thing. Like, the original comic book source material created by Jack Kirby, this movie isn't for everyone, but in reality what movie is?

The Eternals is a super-hero drama told through the mythology of gods of various cultures through out time. The Eternals is part 2001: A Space Odyssey, a family drama and a mystery more than it's a typical super-hero movie. I really enjoyed the dialogue scenes, and to a lesser degree, the exposition. The film puts pop music to good use. Not as good as James Gunn did in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, but Chloe Zhao's film still was solid with the tunes. Who can hate on Pink Floyd? The cast really sold their various characters and their opinions on the various conflicts that have developed between these characters. Kumail Nanjiani steals nearly every scene he's in as Kingo. Kingo’s assistant, Karun (Harish Patel) was an awesomely hilarious sidekick without being a stereotype. Kit Harrington is barely in the film, but he sells the Dane Whitman character and love interest of Sersi with what little screen time that he had. The Eternals is everything I wanted from Captain Marvel and The Inhuman Marvel properties, until the third act. Unfortunately, in the third act the movie falls apart. The movie ends with many questions being ignored rather than just being unanswered. Be sure to wait around for the mid-credit and post-credit scenes as they leave you with many more questions to ponder. 

The Eternals is not a perfect film, but it is a perfectly good way to scratch that Marvel movie/Super-hero film itch.

Rons Gone Wrong 3D Movie Review

After a long drought of any Disney-owned studios releasing any animated films in theaters and in 3D, here comes 20th Century's latest release Ron’s Gone Wrong to save the day! I wasn't expecting anything to blow the lid off my expectations with this film. Hell, until a week before it was released, I didn't know the film would have a 3D distribution model at all. Luckily, Ron’s Gone Wrong did get a 3D release and it looks wonderful in 3D. The 3D has plenty of depth and dimension, native spacing, its colorful and has some lush environments. It also has many examples of some really good pop-out 3D moments that range from faces entering the theater, to a random leg, to particles entering the fray. This is the definition of great 3D, in every way, shape and form. It’s not the best 3D in an animated movie that I have seen, but it’s definitely worth your money to watch Ron’s Gone Wrong in 3D.

Movie

After the closure of Blue Sky studios by Disney/Fox after the financially middling performance of Spies in Disguise, I was wondering what would take the place of the fourth or fifth-tier animation house in Hollywood. In comes a new animation house, UK-based Locksmith Animation, stepping up to bat. Does the studio have the mighty swing to hit it out of the park, or will it be a total strikeout?


Ron’s Gone Wrong is set in the not-too-distant future. A large tech company called Bubble. Bubble has released a revolutionary new toy, the B-Bot. B-Bot’s are designed with the lofty ambition of trying to make friends with other kids and connect to the internet. After a few months, all the kids in the town of Nonsuch have their own B-Bot, all except the lonely and friendless Barney (Jack Dylan Glaser). Barney's birthday arrives, and he finally gets his own B-bot. Sadly this B-bot is a bit flawed. Barney befriends this lovable defective robot.

The film is your typical cookie-cutter movie of a lonely kid having an atypical object/friend who manages to help the lead grow and succeed. This movie is too long and it ends about 20 minutes after the natural conclusion of the story. The film stops and starts several times and it feels the length of a 3 hour epic. The message of the film is kinda confusing as well. The message is exactly what you expect it to be, a message of technology that is too intrusive, derivative and rudimentary. The villain is also too paint-by-the-numbers, who does all the things that corporations do (i.e. sell your data, intrude on your privacy, etc.) and doesn't even get a comeuppance!

There are a few good things about this film. For starters, the animation is really good throughout the film, except for one weird quirk when a fire is started. This fire sequence has a weird frame rate difference that lasted a couple of seconds, but it was fine the next angle. The voice acting, especially Galifinakis and Glaser, are terrific and overall its well cast. There is also some surprising depth with the supporting characters, with actual character arcs and story resolutions that actually make sense. There are some funny scenes as well.

Back to the question I asked at the start, is Ron’s Gone Wrong a home-run? No, there are some issues with the story nuances and plotting that prevent that. Is it a strikeout of a film? Also no. The film is probably a ground rule double; a perfectly adequate family film with enough charm and humor for everyone in the audience to enjoy, just don't expect high art.
