3D Movie Review

3D

For a movie that was never originally intended to be in 3D, Titanic looks beautiful & wonderful in 3D. Titanic has nice moments of both 3D pop out and fantastic moments of 3D depth. 3D Depth is especially strong in this movie, and it perfectly compliments what is shown on screen. Several scenes in the movie will have the characters would run down a long corridor or look down a vast height, and the 3D really makes it feel like you are in the movie with the characters. You really get a sense that are seeing what the characters are seeing. The movie opens in a scene that is underwater and while dark it still looks wonderful in 3D. The particles in the water really pop and give you a fantastic sense of movement and a sense that you are in the sea. The 3D looks natural in many scenes like it was always intended to be this way. This is a superb 3-D conversion a classic 2D movie. The 3D isn’t always perfect as some scenes are not shot in the best ways for 3D. Some camera movements are shaky and that is jarring to see in 3D. One noteworthy scene with a key has flashing lights and that can be difficult to see in 3-D. The 3D really enhances the final act and makes it more intense. Overall Titanic looks fantastic in 3D, and I absolutely recommend watching it in 3-D if you can. I also recommend watching this movie in premium large formats like IMAX, because this is the kind of movie that shines in the biggest screen possible.

Final Verdict:Great 3D

Movie

Titanic was a huge release in 1997/1998, and now 25 years later does it hold up? Believe it or not yesterday (February 9th 2023) is when I watched Titanic for the first time and I am 39 years old. Now I am not totally oblivious as I know about this movie since it was such a huge film, and it has become part of the zeitgeist of late 1990’s and early 2000's. So hopefully you will find my perspective to be interesting.

Titanic is the love story between the characters of Rose and Jack. This love story is told by an elderly Rose in the “present” via flashbacks. Elderly Rose is recanting this story to a contemporary team who is excavating the remains of the titanic over the Atlantic Ocean. Maybe a good 75% of the film is set in 1912, and the other 25% is set the contemporary time (the late 1990’s) the film was made. With the exception of the elderly Rose the rest of the characters who are in the contemporary times are fairly one note and are forgettable. On the titanic in 1912 Rose is engaged to a rich man, but she is frustrated in her life. Rose doesn’t feel happy living in this regal lifestyle. Jack is a charming artist who drifts along the currents of life. They are an unlikely pair but they work well together. Rose’s family and fiancé are elitists and they don’t trust Jack. Jack and Rose have a steamy love affair on the doomed ship that is the titanic. That is essentially the story of Titanic in a nutshell.

While Rose and Jack are the stars of the movie, the titanic ship itself is a huge part of the film. The titanic is perfectly recreated on screen. The titanic itself is a wonderful and distinct back drop for the story. The vast majority of the movie is set on the ‘unsinkable’ ship of titanic, and in a way its a character onto itself. The sets are excellently crafted. How the movie was filmed makes it feel like this is an actual ship, and not just filmed on Hollywood sets. It is difficult to describe but this movie somehow manages to capture the feeling of being on a ship at sea. A few times I even felt a little sea sick as I watched the movie. This probably due to the occasional shaky cam and the combination of the 3D visuals, regardless the movie does a fantastic job of immersing the viewer into its setting. The scenes in the present with the sunken ship of the titanic are also very haunting and interesting to watch in their own right. Titanic is pure movie magic in how it is able to make a ship from 100+ years ago feel new, beautiful and like a actual real living place.

I have no idea how this movie looked in 1998 and how much the “4K restoration” enhanced the visuals, but this movie is simply gorgeous to see and hear. I love how in some scenes they transform the sunken ship into the beautiful ship of the past. The creaking of the wood sounded so real and I love hearing the water surround me in the theatre. The use of real sets and real water really makes you feel like you are not watching a movie, but a documentary. The costumes all look fantastic and authentic. Some quick shots contain dated computer graphics (like a Playstation 2 game) and they look off, but for a 25 year old movie I can give it a pass as the vast majority of the film looks colorful, vibrant and delightful.

Before I watched this movie I was worried that a film that was released 25 years ago that was set over 100 years ago would somehow feel obsolete or archaic. I am happy to report that movie holds up perfectly. It holds up so well because of the amazing special effects but also because of the excellent human interaction. The love story this film presents is well done and is totally believable and is universal. This movie is such a wonderful slice of the human experience. The movie gives you a distinct vision of humanity that hasn’t fundamentally changed (for better and worse). You will see the the stark divide between the rich and the poor. You will see both best and worst of humankind. Titanic is a three hour long movie and yet I was never bored. Ultimately the romantic love story works because the marvelous chemistry between the actors. Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) act like real people in this movie and their performances are immaculate. This love story feel so real and is 100% believable. The last act is extremely thrilling and scary. The movie is wonderful at stimulating your emotions. The director James Cameron knows how to make movies that truly connect and resonate with the viewer. I will admit that I cried like a baby as I watched the movie. I cried for the beautiful love story between Rose and Jack, and I cried at the horrific tragedy and loss of human life that was showcased within this movie. If you don’t cry as you watch this movie you must be some kind of soulless psychopathic sociopathic monster, and I don’t want to be in your company. I fully admit that over the past 25 years that I have been spoiled, and I knew many if not all the plot points and the ending before I watched this movie. Having this knowledge did not detract my enjoyment of the film. The saying “ Its not about the destination but the journey” perfectly describes my experience with this movie. Titanic even after all the memes and pop culture references of the last 25 years is a movie that I was still able to fall in love with. Titanic is one meaningful and engaging experience put onto film.

Titanic is a movie that I have waited 25 years to watch, and it has been worth the wait. Titanic is so perfectly executed in every regard. The story holds up 25 years later, and it will hold up 100 years, or even a 1000 years later because great epic stories like this are timeless. This movie perfectly captures the emotional human experience onto film. Titanic is one of the best films ever brought to cinema and it was incredible to watch it for the first time. Simply put Titanic is filmmaking at its best.

Final Verdict:

10/10, Editors Choice Movie Award

Black Panther 2 Wakanda Forever 3D Movie Review

Black Panther 2 Wakanda Forever 3D Movie Review

Black Panther 2 Wakanda Forever 3D Movie review 3-D

3D

Black Panther Wakanda Forever has many moments to make 3D fans happy. Sadly it does have some issues that also hurt the 3D presentation. First lets talk about the negative. Black Panther Wakanda Forever has many darkly lit scenes. 3D in darkly lit scenes is tricky to do and it doesn’t always work. The movie also has some shaky cam scenes. This odd camera movement makes it difficult to keep the eye focused for the 3D. Some shots I felt like the 3D could have been stronger. All the negative withstanding I still very much enjoyed the 3D aspect of Black Panther Wakanda Forever. The movie has many nice moments of 3D depth and pop outs. You will regularly see spears pop out of the screen. Sometimes the movie has some interesting camera angles and the 3D is better in those shots. Lets go over some specific scenes that benefit from being in 3D. The opening funeral scene with the people walking during the funeral procession. They shoot some of this scene with a camera in a birds eye prospective and you are looking down onto the people. This simple shot looked fantastic in 3D. One sequence when you taken to the underwater city is especially strong in 3D. You have some darkly lit scenes underwater that work very well in 3D. The 3D isn’t as impressive as the underwater scenes in the trailer to Avatar 2 The way of Water, but it’s still really nice. The action sequence in Wakanda is also well done in 3D. One scene with the queen talking to the camera is powerful because of the dialogue but the 3D really enhances the scene and it feels like she is right in front of you and is speaking to you. It’s not a perfect 3D presentation but overall the 3D is very well done.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Black Panther Wakanda Forever is a very emotional movie. Making a Black Panther movie without the great late Chadwick Boseman was a herculean task, and they somehow pulled it off. This is an incredible follow up to one my favorite Marvel movies. I’ll be honest with you and state that I wasn’t hyped for this movie as I walked into the theatre, but when I left the theatre I was very happy with what I watched.

Black Panther Wakanda Forever is the story of Wakanda after the death of its King and the Black Panther T’challa. As the family struggles to continue with their lives they are visited by an outsider named Namor. Namor is a strange man who has wings on his feet and is in search for a brilliant scientist named Riri. Namor states that Riri can potentially damage his land and the land of Wakanda. Namor threatens Wakanda with war if this scientist cannot be contained. The movie follows Shuri, Okoye as they discover the truth about Namor and Riri. What happens between Wakanda and Namor? Do they go to war? You will have to watch the movie to find out.

I loved the cast of Black Panther, and I love them even more in Wakanda Forever. Everyone gives 110% and their acting is on point. I have to highlight Angela Bassett’s character of Ramonda and her performance. Queen Ramonda is simply incredible in this movie and Angela Bassett truly amazing in this role. I liked her performance in the original Black Panther, but in this movie Angela Bassett really steps it up and gives a masterful performance in this movie. Bassett’s heart and soul is showcased in this movie and she delivered each line with power and eloquence that is rarely seen on screen. Angela Bassett’s performance wowed me. I really enjoyed Dominque Thorne as Riri. Riri’s dialogue felt so real and authentic. Tenoch Huerta has a great performance as Namor. Namor is sympathetic, interesting and is a passionate character. Namor might be the antagonist of this movie but he really isn’t a villain. Everyone brings their A game in Wakanda forever and I like all of the cast.

I admit that so far in this review that I have been gushing over Black Panther Wakanda Forever but this movie has its flaws. The movie is a little too long. The pacing can be all over the place as some scenes flow well and some scenes are slow. The movie has many unanswered questions that really bothered me. I won’t spoil any aspect of this movie, but some vital plot points are missing depth. I have to dock them points for not giving us some concrete answers on a few key things. If you haven’t seen the original Black Panther movie you will probably be lost in this movie. Some of the odd camera angles that I mentioned earlier are distracting to the eye and took me out of the movie. Overall my issues with Black Panther Wakanda Forever are minor, but they do add up.

Black Panther Wakanda Forever wowed me in a many moments. The action scenes are well shot and are very cool to watch. The cinematography with a few exceptions is very well done. The comedic aspect is very enjoyable and they know how to please the crowd and give us a break from the somberness of the story. How this movie develops the lore of the under water city where Namor lives is well done. Namor as a character feels fresh and really distinct. The movie has many interesting surprises. The third act is exciting and the ending is satisfying.

Black Panther Wakanda Forever is a powerful emotional journey of a movie. I cried, I cheered, I laughed and I was blown away by this film. It’s a heavy movie and its not perfect, but overall I really loved it and I can highly recommend it.

Final Verdict: 9/10

Avatar 3D Movie Review

Avatar 3D Movie Review

Written By: Jacob Scarberry

3D

Simply put Avatar is a James Cameron 3D movie. James Cameron knows how to do 3D movies, and he is a pioneer in 3D technology. I could just stop right there and you'd get the point, but I'll elaborate in this review. The point is, Avatar is an absolute 3-D powerhouse, and with it being shot (largely) in 3D it aids in how beautiful the 3D can be in this movie. I didn't see this movie in 2009, but Avatar has a ton of 3D depth, and many instances of 3D pop-outs and a terrific use of color. It will be difficult to limit my appreciation to only a few noteworthy moments or scenes. I have to mention the floating mountain islands, they look amazing in 3D. The various aerial scenes are also top notch in 3D. The sequence with the tree of souls, and the floating seeds is amazing to see in 3D. I definitely appreciate what Avatar has done for 3D, and 3D storytelling, and how James Cameron has helped to make 3DTVs a thing. In closing the entirety of Avatar is fantastic to see 3D.

Final Verdict:

Great 3D & Editors Choice Award

Movie

James Cameron is a powerhouse director, having directed some amazing films, with Terminator 2 being one of my all time favorites, and with his previous film being Titanic netting him 4 Oscars, expectations were sky high for his follow-up. Cameron knew this, and instead of sacrificing his vision, he took twelve years to bring it to life, in-between dives down to the Titanic, of course. Were the high expectations met? In my eyes, no.

Avatar is practically a CGI-addled remake of the 1990 movie Dances with Wolves, but done with even less subtlety and class. The plot revolves around a former Marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who is a paraplegic whose twin brother who was murdered in a robbery gone bad. To salvage an important mission, he's hired by a corporation to take his brother's place going to the planet of Pandora. Pandora is chock full of unobtanium, and it happens to be in the centerpiece of the indigenous tribe, the Navi.

Jake is sent to infiltrate the Navi in an avatar, to try to diplomatically remove the Navi and mine the super rare mineral. Things get complicated as Jake begins to assimilate into the tribe, becoming one of them, falling in love with Neyteri (Zoe Saldanha) and gaining an enemy with Colonel Quarritch (Stephen Lang). Jake must use his military knowhow, his newfound Navi skills, and his brotherhood to stop the destruction of Pandora.

The film is a 2 and a half hour feast for the eyes, delivering a high-quality visual experience that is colorful and well-shot, and the HDR helps to make the world of Pandora look like a stunning beautiful place. Avatar looks pretty , but it’s also a pretty hollow movie. Avatar’s message is rammed into your head repeatedly to the point of hatred, and the world isn't fully developed. Creature designs are also rather lazy and the Navi themselves are just blue cats with a tentacle attached and more human-esque eyes. The acting ranges from decent to over-the-top, the writing, especially the dialogue, is rote and predictable. When Avatar is done you're left feeling overwhelmed by the whole endeavor instead of being inspired or in awe.

Despite these problems, seeing it in 3D on the largest screen available to me within a reasonable driving distance, in a heated recliner, with Dolby Atmos surround sound, made this worth the trip. The whole film is clearly Cameron's, and he has a firm grasp on pacing and action, and I wasn't lost or confused during the action or expository scenes. Avatar has a terrific score by the late, great James Horner. The wonderful music helped make this an easier pill to swallow.

Does Avatar deserve to be the highest grossing film of all time? No. But I can see why it is, especially having never viewed the film before today (September 24, 2022) as it's an experience moreso than a work of art.

Avatar is a showcase of CGI spectacle and gripping action of the highest order. Regardless of the flaws, see it on the biggest screen you've got handy and in 3D, it's a treat.

Final Verdict: 7/10
